i read today in the news (yahoo news mind you) about quantum teleportation... i'm going to tell you a story based on that today...
ok, first off, teleportation doesn't work... if you managed to teleport someone using a mechanical device (anything, like computers hooked upto lazors to scan the atom types of your body, their frequencies, and everyhing) and transported them to another place... that person is now officially dead. what's left? how is this teleportation? well... there's an exact double of them wherever they were transported to... how is this NOT cloning? well, the "teleporter" destroys whatever it translates into numerical data and transfers at the speed of light to the relay point.
so, why doesn't this work? well, like i said before, you're now left with someone new... although, i'm not a religous person, and believe that we are the way we are based on experiences we've had in our lives, and they shape the way we react to everything, this person will not be you... there is no possible way that there can be an exact dupe of you...
First off, this process is so slow, that if it did start to trasfer you, by the time it finnished, not only would you be dead, decintigrated, and growing the 100th tree in the dirt created by your decomposed body, but, if they could do it faster, you'd be dead anyway, as your body would get there in parts... what does this mean? just imaging someone cut off both your legs, and said... hey, you can have these back when you get to the mall... what's gonna happen? you're going to bleed to death... so what's so different from teleportatoin? that, combined with the fact that if they start from the bottom (that's what they were planning, at least in the diagrams) you will very slowly, but progressively, get shorter, as the bottom most layers of your body will disapear... what does this do? well, basicly you're going to rematerialize into a fricken pancake... your choice...
but, what about star trek? how come they can do it? because, they use a different technological process, but it's similar in many ways... there are other ways to do this... start trek doesn't know what they are, they just make stuff up and of course it's going to work right? it is a tv show after all... but there are different ways of doing this, at a much faster rate, without having to use all that bloody processor power... i'm just not at liberty to specify them... if any of those scientists want to know, they can ask me... and i'll tell them directly... but, until then, my knowladge is a little busy working on some similar projects...
